Referendum starts with mass mail-out

A flurry of supporters rushed to the Whangarei Loves Hundertwasser Facebook page to report they received their voter information packs today, the first day of the binding public referendum.

Despite an earlier notice from Whangarei District Council saying to expect the packs ‘this week or next’ it seems a large portion were delivered on Thursday 14th May, the official start day for the Whangarei’s first referendum in over 15 years.

The referendum process is being conducted using the First Past the Post electoral system. Voting documents are being sent to all voters in the District who are on the electoral roll.

Key dates

Tuesday 10 March 2015 – Referendum process begins
Thursday 14 May – Friday 5 June 2015 – Voting period
Friday 5 June 2015 – Voting closes at 12 noon

The final results will be announced on 9th June.
